Avocado in Lotions & Lip Products: A Hidden Danger for Bird Owners

Bird owners are careful about diet, but one major danger is often overlooked: avocado in skincare, body care, and lip products.

Even though we would never feed avocado to our birds, we may accidentally expose them through the ingredients in our hand lotions, body creams, and lip balms —

and even microscopic amounts can be toxic.

Persin: Why Avocado Is Dangerous for Birds

——————————————-

Avocado contains a compound called persin, which is harmless to humans but toxic to parrots.

Key Scientific Facts

– Persin is an **oil‑soluble toxin** found in the fatty/oily parts of the avocado.  – Persin resides in **idioblast oil cells** in the fruit and leaves, meaning it begins in the oil portion of the avocado.

– Avocado toxicosis in birds is well documented in veterinary literature, such as the Merck Veterinary Manual.

ASPCA Poison Control confirms avocado (including the oily portion) is toxic to birds and other animals.

Studies show refining changes fatty compounds, but do NOT prove persin is fully removed from cosmetic oils.

Bottom line: **Unrefined and minimally refined avocado oil almost certainly contains persin**, and there is no published proof that cosmetic‑grade avocado oil is free of it. For highly sensitive parrots, “trace” exposure still matters.

Where Avocado Hides in Beauty Products

————————————–

Avoid products listing:

– Avocado oil

– Avocado butter

– Avocado fruit extract

– Persea gratissima oil

These ingredients appear in:

– Lip balms & lip oils

– Lip glosses

– Hand creams

– Body lotions

– Facial moisturizers

– Hair serums

– Cuticle oils

Contamination Risk for Bird Owners

———————————-

Even if your bird never touches your skin directly:

If you apply hand lotion and then touch their food, bowls, toys, or cage —

you may accidentally contaminate them with persin.

Birds explore everything with their beaks, including:

– Pellets

– Chop

– Treats

– Water dishes

– Toys

Perches

Even “quick absorbing” lotions leave behind residue.

Best Practices for Bird-Safe Skincare

————————————-

1. Avoid all skincare with avocado oil or extract.

2. Wash hands thoroughly before touching bird food or bowls.

3. Keep lip products strictly away from birds.

4. Use bird-safe alternatives like coconut oil, shea butter, cocoa butter,

jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, sunflower oil.

5. Use a separate “bird-safe routine” on days you prep food or train birds.
